Well it was on again. The Latrobe City International Open brought worldwide water-ski champions to our backyard drink. And it was a great success. On the 4th and 5th of March, Lake Narracan roared into life in the lead up to the Moomba Masters – which were held the following week.
11 international waterski champions competed across the weekend, with 8 facing off head to head on Sunday – the final day of the competition. Events included Slalom, Trick, and Jump. With hundreds of spectators coming down to watch the competition unfold on our waters.
Nate Smith from the US, who is the current Slalom world record holder, ran a 1.5 at 9.75 – the highest score ever recorded in Australia. Albeit, on a trial run. And Jacinta Carol came first in Overall. The weekend event was live-streamed to a world-wide audience, and was later repeated on Fox Aurora channel 173 on the 1st and 15th of April. It may again be repeated, so keep an eye on the tv guide.
Hundreds flocked down over the weekend to check it out
Throughout the weekend many local and not-so-local families came down to spectate. For a few, it was their first time attenting such and event. Other’s reminisced about the old competitions that used to be held in the 1990’s. As the boats roared, the mignions dipped their toes in the water watching skiers fly through the air.
The Latrobe Valley Water Ski Club will host the event in 2018, again the week before the Moomba Masters. And they are looking at ways to make it even bigger, so lock it in your calendars. Latrobe City Council have showed massive support, as well as major sponsors Nautique Boats, KD Water Sports, and Saviges Road Fast & Easy. Crawford Marine in Morwell are also a fantastic ongoing sponsor for the club.
Spectacular sites were seen across all the events
The event is a major coup for our region and town, and it’s fantastic to hear folks from afar speak so highly of our world class facilities. Even if they talk funny. They ski good. And keep our local champions on their toes.
We welcome them all back in 2018, and hope many more can make the journey to our shores. We invite your local family, friends and neighbours to come down and check it out. You just might like what you see.
Latrobe Valley Water Ski Club now has a club boat, so if you are interested in becoming a member and learning to ski, get in contact with them today.
